Yarn Review: Mirasol Nuna

via

I picked up 2 skeins of Mirasol Nuna yarn on an online shopping whim and I am so pleased I did. This yarn is listed as a sport weight but I'd say it's somewhere in-between sport and fingering. It's 40% Silk, 40% Wool, and 20% Bamboo. You get just shy of 200 yards per skein. It's silky soft, has a beautiful sheen, and is absolutely wonderful to knit with. I've been holding onto this yarn from quite some time now and when I saw Veronik Avery's pattern I knew this yarn would be perfect!

I used two full skeins in Maya Blue on this Lace Ribbon Scarf. I used size 4 needles and it ended up being around 5 foot long. I added 4" of fringe on both sides. This yarn blocks like a dream! This scarf is so airy and light and it feels wonderful against your skin. I absolutely love this yarn. I wish my local specialty shop carried it. Either way I am certainly purchasing more off eBay.

Yarn Review: Noro Cash Iroha

One thing I must say about Noro yarn, you cannot beat the color! Their yarn is always so vivid and lush! It's an eye catcher and for good reason! I just can't help myself I have to buy at least one skein! I purchased two skeins of Noro Cash Iroha at only 99 yards per-skein. (holy crap! not much right!?) Despite that, I had a very fun time knitting with it. It's not to thin, it's about as thick as sport yarn. Very soft to the touch. The only problem I came across while knitting with this yarn happened during my bind off. In addition to my hat below I made a pair of gloves. I used Elizabeth Zimmerman’s sewn bind off. This yarn does not appreciate any kind of tensioned pulling or constant use in the same place. The yarn broke every easily before I could get to end of my work. I tried a blunt needle as well as using my knitting needles while binding off and had the same outcome. While I love the color, I'm not sure I'd re-purchase this particular type of yarn.

Robin's Egg Hat on Ravelry. I cannot believe it knitted up on only one of my Noro skeins! I love this hat. Very easy pattern to knit and it knits up quick! This Noro yarn is a bit itchy though. The button came out of a vintage jar of buttons that was started by my great grandmother. I hoped it came off one of my grandfathers uniforms...unfortunately that wasn't the case.

Yarn Review: Red Heart Soft Yarn

Browsing the yarn isles at my local craft store I always notice Red Heart Soft Yarns. The color hues are dark and rich. I decided I wanted to use this yarn to complete my Luna Scarf, since the author of the pattern used it herself. It's very easy to crochet and knit with but I must say, I wish I hadn't used it, not for a scarf at least. It looses its softness when it's crocheted with. It keeps a little when knitted, but not much. The final product has a shinny, acrylicly-ness about it. The yarn is 100% acrylic, but you don't feel it when the yarn is in it's skein. It feels nice and soft, hence its name. This yarn is also a bit ichy around my neck. For this reason, I'm not sure if I'll be wearing my scarf again any time soon. Its a shame really, the scarf came out rather beautifully.

Now just because this yarn doesn't suit my needs for wearable accessories, doesn't mean this yarn wouldn't be great for Amigurumi. Which I suspect it will be. Stiff Acrylic yarns are great for keeping their shape.

Yarn Review: Noro Yuzen

I bought two skeins of Noro Yuzen at a yarn specialty shop. So far, this yarn has been a pleasure to work with. This yarn is semi-soft to the touch. It doesn't feel acrylicy at all making it ideal for hats, scarves, gloves, etc. I would not recommend this yarn for Amigurumi. The yarn weight varies quite often and it goes through spurts of very thick yarn and then very thin....with knitting the variation isn't that noticeable. I've heard people complain about knotting, but I have yet to encounter this problem. I also have only used Noro Yuzen. I have yet to test out other Noro yarns like the popular Silk Garden. Eventually though ;D

I love watching the color variations when using this yarn. You almost don't notice it happening until you see the results. I can't wait to finish this project! At first glance from the way the skein is packaged, you can't really tell just how beautifully it actually knits. I would buy more of this yarn! If theres no specialty yarn shop near you, you can order this yarn online. You can see some of the color variations here! But if your interested, order soon. I recently noticed that this yarn has been discontinued!
